Creating an interesting mix of styles is something I love to do and I’m always inspired by the colours and textures of other cultures in my own designs. Incorporating a bit of Moroccan design in any room scheme gives a little bit of that ‘boho’ vibe to your home – that heady mix of both warm textures and bright textiles, the glint of metallics and the beauty of patterns colliding creates an exotic energy in a space.
So how do you get this look in your own home? Well you don’t have to live in Marrakesh nor do you even need to buy a ticket abroad to the souks to make your purchases to have a bit of Morocco in your own home. Incorporating a few details is quite easy this days with the number of retailers now stocking this fabulous style.
Textiles are generally woven into striking patterns and bring both texture and colour into a space. From rugs to cushions, killims to durries – in this instance, the adage “the more the merrier” applies for a layered relaxed vibe! Consider soft absorbent hamman towels for your bathroom or kitchen, a few leather poufs, metal tray tables and beautiful textural rugs to bring a bit of Morocco to any room in your home.
Lighting is a must – from lanterns on the floor to beautiful sculptural metal ceiling lights and metallic votives, the lighting designs allow for a playful pixelated light to fall on your room in the evenings. Layered lighting creates ambiance and there’s a wonderful exotic feel to this look with mixed metals reflecting and bouncing light around your space.
Create intimate seating areas with low-level furniture and large scatter cushions and poufs and layer furniture with throws and cushions for a truly bohemian atmosphere.
Bring in natural carved wood by way of room screens with traditional patterns and lots of palms and plants to create life and allow the organic shapes of nature to play their part.
Outdoors, consider hammocks, large palms and intricate mosaic fountains or simply layer a table with the glow of small glass votives in pretty colours.
And finally don’t forget to play on all your senses. Infuse the air with incense for a fragrant touch of this beautiful and exotic design.
